Holiday Survival For Us Fitness Nuts

Holiday survival? Yup, it’s that time of year when everyone is looking for the latest tips and tricks on how to survive the holiday season without adding another six to ten pounds before January turns the corner.

It seems like we want to be reminded of the obvious this time of year. What’s the best diet, who is doing what in Hollywood and which ab machine on TV will turn me into the next super model? In truth, every year around this time we tighten up our belts and start looking for answers to why we don’t fit into the same size cloths we did in high school or before the kids or before that “tragic life circumstance” that made us gain 15 pounds.

The thing is it’s none of the above. We gain weight because we don’t have activity levels that equal our eating levels.

The real deal is that we don’t need to find any new tricks or angles. Keep your cash in your pocket. You can’t pay for results. The basics have been pretty much figured out over the last 50 years of health and fitness. What we need to do is get control of ourselves and our emotions. We need to stop looking to outside sources for reasons to treat our bodies and therefore our minds better and realize that temporary satisfaction is just that. Temporary. Continue Reading »

Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva UFC 79

Having a hard time picking a winner on this one! There is an interesting background to it all. This fight has been in the works since early `06 and likely prior to that, we just do not know about. It has the makings of a great war and hopefully can live up to the hype!

Back in July 2006 at UFC 61 Dana introduces Silva to the UFC crowd and brings him in the cage. This is prior to the whole Pride purchase so this was a huge event at the time as there was always question as to which organization had the better fighters. Wandy gets the mic and says he wants to the fight the best in the UFC, i.e. Mr. Iceman, so in comes Chuck and they have a little stare down. The announcement was for the fight to be in November with one stipulation, Chuck had to beat Renato Sobral ‘Babalu’ in August and retain his title. *Side note: Babalu got fired from UFC for not relinquishing a choke hold in a later fight after the ref told him to stop when his opponent tapped, serves him right!* Continue Reading »

Learning To Ride A Snowboard

If you can’t stand another hour on the treadmill or bike, get out snowboarding. Those of in Canada have a lot of winter to go through so we might as well get the best out of it and head to the hill for a ride.

Today was a great day to go riding. It’s Sunday night and no one was on the hill. Good time to try to ride goofy, but we will get to that a little later. Since I have just started to learn how to ride a snowboard, I thought I would go through some of the tips that have helped me out.

The first thing you want to do when you go out riding for the first day is make sure you have snow pants on because you will be spending a lot of time on your butt.

EFA Greens Plus And Water

Thanks for the information on the exercises in your program. I don’t want to be a pest or seem like an idiot, but your program and these bonus books have me so pumped I want to do everything perfect. On the diet plans:

1. Where it has like Veggies x 2, does that mean to eat 2 cups?
2. On the meals where you have shakes it has a serving of….greens? What types of greens?
3. Do I mix all this with milk, water?
4. Where it has 3g salmon/fish oil…does this mean I can either eat 3g of salmon or use 3g of fish oil on something?

Set Your Goals And Achieve Them

2008 has begun and if you are like me, you’ve made a few goals for yourself. So what goals have you set for yourself this year? A flat stomach? A tighter butt? Maybe you want to get stronger and finally make those biceps pop. Whatever goal you have set, I’m going to give you some tips that I use to make sure that you accomplish your fitness goals this year.

First Tip To Goal Setting: Reminders

The first tip is put your goal where you can see it. When I log off the net, sitting right there on my laptop for physical goals I see:

PHYSICAL GOALS 2008:
Be able to do 5 freestanding Hand Stand Pushups.
Be able to do backflips on demand.
Be able to walk 100 feet on my hands.
Do a 360 on my snowboard. Continue Reading »

Kundalini Yoga Chair Pose for Sexual Health

Kundalini Yoga Exercise for Improving Sexual Vitality

Hatha Yoga Posture for Toning Thighs & Buttocks

Time to build up the flexibility section of the site. I will be gathering posts from other good sites and linking to them from here. I would write about the subject of yoga myself but it’s not something that I feel my level is high enough to teach from. You can go here on the site to see “normal” “general” fitness style stretching instructions

Onto the Chair Pose.

Chair pose is not chair yoga! Not that I have anything against chair yoga, I am (as you must have guessed by now :-) a fan of all types of yoga, but chair pose, unlike the easier postures of chair yoga, is instead a tough little yoga pose. It is for toning your leg muscles, building lower body strength and improving your overall sexual health.

Px90 Workout Program Help

If you’re not busy on something, I would like to ask for some advice on PX90. I am currently doing some routines for 3 months in order to get ripped for summer. That is if I can make it.

I am quite sure you have heard of P90X. It’s from beachbody, and the instructor for this program is Tony Horton. You probably, know him 40 year old, ripped, funny guy. Anyway, I decided to try the programs but only managed to get the workout calendar and the cardio based videos. They are really long and very exhausting. They really get your heart rate up. I chose the lean phase since it’s more cardio based. It lets you perform three cardio routines, two strength workouts, and a yoga workout during the middle of the week. I did my research and decided to apply my knowledge on fitness. Since I didn’t get the nutrition plan, I decided to adopt a bodybuilder cutting phase, since the workouts I mostly do is cardio based. For the nutrition, I heard the plan was in three phases (3 months appropriate). A Fat burning phase which means high protein, moderate fats, low carb to stimulate a fat burning signal since you’re body is adapting to the changes. Continue Reading »

Shoulder Muscle Training Trick

Weight Plate Pizza Presses for Massive Shoulders

If you’re looking for an effective new way to train your shoulders, look no further than the Pizza Press.
You won’t be using a barbell, dumbell or cable for this one…all you need is a weight plate!

When you read the description and see the pictures of this one in action, you’ll know exactly where I got the name for it!

Basically, you’re going to be doing what looks like a standard shoulder press movement. But here’s the trick…instead of holding dumbells or a barbell, you’re going to be using a single weight plate.

So how do you press a weight plate? Well, you’re going to use one hand to grab the plate and place it FLAT on top of your other hand so you’re pressing with your palm.

Ever see a picture of a shotputter about to throw? THAT is the position the weight plate will be in - palm up, ready to shotput it across the room. As for the name of the exercise, think of the weight plate you’re pressing as a pizza you don’t want to drop on the floor as you’re pressing it overhead.

Training The Lower Abdominals

There are two basic areas of confusion when it comes to abdominal training. The first of these is that of the much sought after lower abdominals. Many folks (including my new personal training clients) say that their upper abdominals are starting to really show, but the lower abdominals are not coming in at all regardless of how much training they do. These are also usually the same folks that are always on the lookout for the miracle lower abdominal exercise.

But if you look at the anatomical picture of the abdominals found here (clients only), you can clearly see that the rectus abdominus is a single muscle running from sternum to pelvis. The lower abdominals do not exist. Continue Reading »

Comfort Eating

Hello Ray,

I found your web site, signed up for the Deluxe program, and was wondering if you could answer a couple of questions for me. I’m an Endomorph body type. I weigh 300 lbs. I do really good on the low-carb “Atkins” type diets, but I noticed in your site (and others) that Endomorphs should eat complex carbs, which would “kill” the low carb concept by putting me over the daily intake of carbs. So, is it better that I lose weight on a low carb diet, or should I stick with your diet?

And why? Continue Reading »

Cardio Workout Balancing Act

Hi Ray, I know you are really busy, etc., but I do have your fat to fit book and I am just trying to refocus on my cardio workout / weights balancing act.

Female
45
5′3″
approx. 123lbs

(I am fairly lean, however, any weight I do carry is in my lower body and I find that if I can get under 120 my legs start really responding nicely to definition and “leanness”, I am not after bulky legs)
RHR: 46

I am within 5lbs of my desired body weight and would still like to burn more fat particularly off my legs as they are not nearly as defined as I would like! I am currently doing a split routine that allows me to do a leg workout 2x per week and upper body workout 2x per week. My question for you is how many cardio workouts should I do to drop the last bit of weight but to compliment the legs. I am extremely strong cardio workout wise as I have been a junkie for so long that my resting heart rate is now around 46 or so. My endurance allows me to do a cardio workout with incline training at 12/14 inclines for an hour at 80 to 90% heart rate. Do you think I should bring this down to 70 or 75%? Do you think there is truth to fat burning cardio workouts at lower heart rate levels?
